Elham Ahmadi is a Persian-Australian artist based in Sydney. Her practice explores the nexus of eastern and western aesthetic traditions and the emotive aspects of cultural identity as a state of 'in-between-ness' and transformation. Working primarily in painting, Ahmadi uses an ethnographic lens to bring to light the ancient craft practices of the Bakhtiari tribe, a nomadic people of southwestern Iran. She combines motifs from Bakhtiari textiles and costume with modernist formalism focusing on color, line and the repetition of pattern. Ahmadi's paintings, mixed media and sculptural works are semi-autobiographical, merging personal stories with social concerns, and bringing together visual characteristics from Persian calligraphy, modernist painting, and Bakhtiari textiles.
Ahmadi’s work is also informed by the poetic traditions of her Persian cultural heritage; particularly how these poems can define a sense “place,” in much the same way that painting can bring together references to time, place, and cultural meaning through form, pattern, and metaphor.
